I’m just an ole chunk of coal, but I’m gonna be a diamond someday

Evidently not today, though. We visited the Diamond Crater State Park in Arkansas today, the only diamond mine in the United States that allows you to dig for diamonds and keep what you find. You can’t pass up an opportunity like that. We got to the park early, rented our shovels, buckets and screens and sought out our fortune. Sam and I started out wet sifting, bringing buckets of dirt to sift through in huge tubs of water. Kristi and Katie try their hand at dry sifting, pouring dirt through the screens without water.

We spent the entire day, playing in the dirt. We found lots of quartz, and other pretty rocks but no diamonds. We met one man who has searched in the park almost every day for 32 years. He has found over 3,000 diamonds and made a small fortune. Lots of other visitor’s seemed to be semi-pros as well, but none had been as dedicated or successful as that gentleman.

When we arrived we were informed that an average of two diamonds are found each day. On Monday 12 diamonds were found, on Tuesday 7 were unearthed. Today, none! Yep that’s right, not one diamond found during our visit. Oh well, maybe someday.
